What Is a Skin Barrier—and How Do You Support It?

If your face feels tight after cleansing, your moisturiser suddenly stings, or you’re dealing with dry, flaky patches, your skin may need a little barrier support.

The answer isn’t always another active ingredient. Sometimes, it’s giving your skin a break and getting the basics right.

What is the skin barrier?

Your skin’s outermost layer, the stratum corneum, helps keep moisture inside and unwanted substances out. Think of it as a brick wall: skin cells are the bricks, and lipids—including ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids—form the mortar between them.

When this protective layer is disrupted, skin can lose moisture more easily and become more vulnerable to irritation. Tightness, dryness, flaking and sensitivity can be clues, although these symptoms can also have other causes.

What is transepidermal water loss?

Transepidermal water loss, or TEWL, is water passing through the skin and evaporating into the air. It’s a normal process, but it can increase when the barrier isn’t functioning well.

That’s why simply adding moisture may not be enough: helping your skin retain it matters too.

How to support your skin barrier

1. Give irritating actives a break

If your skin is sore, stinging or unusually sensitive, pause exfoliating acids such as glycolic or salicylic acid and non-prescription retinol while it settles.

Retinoids are vitamin A derivatives, rather than exfoliating acids. They can be useful in a well-tolerated routine, but can also cause dryness and irritation. Tretinoin is a prescription retinoid: if it’s irritating your skin, speak to your prescriber about adjusting your routine.

Your skin doesn’t need to “push through” discomfort to earn its glow.

2. Cleanse gently

Choose a gentle, non-stripping, preferably fragrance-free cleanser. Use lukewarm water, avoid vigorous rubbing and pat dry.

That squeaky-clean feeling isn’t the goal. Skin should feel comfortable after washing, rather than tight and desperate for moisturiser.

3. Treat exfoliation as optional

Flaky skin can make it tempting to scrub, but an irritated barrier needs a rest from exfoliation—including cleansing devices.

Once your skin feels comfortable again, our Sonic Glow Foam Cleanser can be considered as an optional cleansing tool, following its instructions and using light pressure. Stop if it causes redness, tightness or stinging.

Mechanical exfoliation isn’t automatically gentler than acids, and “natural” doesn’t guarantee mildness. Choose what your skin tolerates.

4. Moisturise consistently

Apply a gentle moisturiser after cleansing, while skin is slightly damp. Ingredients such as glycerin help attract water, while emollients soften skin and help it feel more comfortable.

Choose a formula that suits your skin and doesn’t sting. Consistency matters more than a crowded bathroom shelf.

5. Lock in moisture with a barrier balm

A barrier balm adds an occlusive layer that helps reduce water loss. Think of it as a comfort blanket over your moisturiser.

Our BarrierForm Balm contains petrolatum, squalane, ceramides and vitamin E. Petrolatum helps limit moisture escaping, while squalane softens skin and ceramides are lipids naturally found in the skin barrier.

Apply a thin layer over moisturiser, particularly to dry areas, as tolerated. The aim is to reduce excessive water loss—not stop the skin’s normal water exchange completely.

A simpler routine for happier skin

Start with gentle cleansing, moisturiser and a barrier balm where needed. In the morning, finish with broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, applied as directed.

If redness, burning or cracking persists, seek advice from a pharmacist or healthcare professional. Barrier care can support skin comfort, but persistent symptoms may need a diagnosis and treatment.

Your skin doesn’t always need more. Sometimes, it needs gentle, consistent care—and permission to stop being exfoliated into next Tuesday.
